Indian Summer Festival

Each fall during the first full weekend in October, the Woody Gap Sports Club, the Suches Community, and Woody Gap School hold the Indian Summer Festival. The festival includes arts and crafts featuring antiques, pottery, leather crafts, needlework, local produce, jewelry, folk art, handcrafted furniture, and homemade goodies. Food concessions are plentiful. Various musical groups provide ongoing entertainment. Other activities include The Run Above the Clouds, Country Square Dance, The Athletic Auction, Cherokee Drama, and the delicious desserts made by the Gaddistown Homemakers. All profits from the festival are donated to the school to provide assistance for educational and athletic expenses and to provide scholarships for graduating seniors.

Local Studies

Local Studies class was established in 2000 with the help of funds received from a Rural Challenge Grant, which is part of the Annenberg Foundation. The Local Studies class was added to the high school curriculum as an extension of Old Fashion Day and as a result of gathering ideas from other Appalachian schools. This class allows students to learn and participate in hands on activities involving mountain customs and skills. With the passing of time, fewer elders remain in the community to share their first hand knowledge of the mountain customs. This, along with the rapid growth and development, fast pace of life, and unawareness of the disappearing mountain culture has jeopardized the continued existence of the history. The goals of the class include working with community members to document the history and culture of the area. The class incorporates hands-on, place-based education into this process. In the same instance, the students learn the state-mandated curriculum across many subject areas as they document and preserve the customs, and heritage for future generations. The students learn about civic responsibility and character education by being involved with the cooperative effort of community members, faculty, and students.
